This I Believe ...

Write anything of importance to you: philosophy, politics, religion, relationships, art, self-knowledge, competition, peace, children, parents, education, aging--anything important to you to share.

Keith Sanderson sent the following essay about supporting his daughter and being a father.

During the past week my daughter Christine competed in a contest that was co-sponsored by the Chicago Tribune Red Eye and MySpace.the web site.  I used my modest talents and did a viral marketing campaign on her behalf using my personal “long neglected friends and acquaintances of Keith” email list as the basis of my efforts to gain votes for Christine.  Quite frankly, I was amazed by the positive response by many of the people on the list including some Milne Classmates.

Unfortunately despite more than 8,000 votes Christine lost by a margin of only 2.2%. It was a race down to the wire.

During the midst of the competition someone replied to one of my e-mails with this email.  The complete contents are shown below.

The writer wrote, "You have to be kidding.....this crap for a 33 year old gal? You must have little to do in life to consider this important.  This instant "success" is what’s wrong with America."

I was taken back by the crudeness and insensitivity of the email.  Then I really thought about its contents beginning with ...."this crap for a 33 year old gal?"

The wording indicates someone who is short on vocabulary and long on insensitivity.  Probably someone from my generation who still thinks of women as gals, and who thinks women can never accomplish anything.

The writer then says, "You must have little to do in life to consider this important."

To me this was a pleasant diversion.  A diversion that allowed me to be involved in something one of my children was doing.  As our children grow older opportunities to cheer for them become less frequent.  I haven't cheered so much for Christine since she played high school basketball and competed in track.  So, perhaps in the grand scheme of things this wasn't important.  However, in the eyes of a father cheering for his daughter,  this is important, even is she is just a "33 year old gal," in the eyes of some people.

Lastly the writer, and I must assume a male writer states, "This instant success is what’s wrong with America."

What instant success?  Certainly not the MySpace web site and the contest.  The web site is one means for Christine to share her art.  Entering and competing in the contest was a hope to win the prize which was a feature in the Chicago Tribune Red Eye Edition.

Christine, who is 33, is a mother a wife, has a successful graphic design business, has been featured in Factio Magazine in 2006, http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=factio+magazine+christine+star+scott&btnG=Google+Search was named up and coming Chicago Artist by Gen Art, through a grant is working on a 25-foot mosaic mural at a local high school, shows her work at local art shows, and she and her husband have raised more than $30,000 for charity, and only finds time to paint at night after her daughter goes to bed.  I would say she is working hard for any success she may achieve, and believe me none of it is instant success.

Why am I writing this to you?

Because I want my friends and acquaintances to share my joy in being a father of an energetic and hard-working young woman and see how I respond to someone who writes "You have to be kidding.....this crap for a 33 year old gal?"

I pity this stranger for not understanding that a father can be proud of his child, that a father may want to share his child's successes.  I pity him because he obviously feels women can achieve little or he would have not referred to my daughter as a 33 year old gal.  She is a woman, and one who I am very proud.  Perhaps sir, what's wrong with America is there are some people who make assumptions and will never give women credit for accomplishing anything.

I say to you, whoever you are, thank you for your letter.  It made me pause and reflect what this upcoming father's day means to me and the love I have for my children.

I Too Have A Dream

What will tomorrow bring?  Where we have been heading may be clearly seen today, and hopefully we will continue to change for the better.

While nuclear annihilation with the Soviet Union has become a thing of the past, the ecology of this whole planet has reached a very critical state, and still the politicians in Washington pay so very little attention to it.

The war in Iraq was an Administrative blunder from the very beginning; and I should worry about Iran making a nuclear bomb in 6 or 7 years, when the now deposed Soviet Union had literally thousands of them in the recent past, with America’s name imprinted on them?

I just turned 62 years old.  Well more than half way I figure, and I have a dream of what the future may well be like, and it goes a little bit like this:

I dream of health care being made available to everyone who wants it, not just to those who can afford health insurance.

I dream of education for everyone who is capable of achieving it, all the ways to the doctorate if they can master this; and I dream that our educational system is once again the very best in the world, not near the bottom of the heap in the civilized world as it currently is.

I dream that no American goes without food and/or shelter; and I dream that everyone who wants a job will have one, because the old economic theories of Adam Smith and Karl Marx have been replaced by one which works so very much better.

I dream that because of this new economic system, that there are no more recessions and/or depressions, and that inflation is no longer a real social concern.

And I dream that Workfare has replaced Welfare, and I dream that someone is no longer paid to do nothing with my hard earned money.

I dream that the many fears resulting from the hole in the Ozone Layer of the atmosphere will be no more, and that today’s current alarm about the dreaded Thermal Effect - with the oceans rapidly rising - will become a thing of the past.

And I dream that there will be plentiful clean, clear water running everywhere on this planet; that there will be no more smog coming from air inversions in our many cities; and I dream that there will be no more pollution of the earth’s soil.

I dream that much of this change will come about because fossil and nuclear fuels will no longer be our primary source of energy, and I dream that solar, wind, and thermal energy will be highly developed.  I also dream that in the very near future, non-radioactive fusion energy will be intensely researched by the government you and I pay for.

I dream that in the future very few people will have cause to get a divorce, and that no longer will more than one-third of this nation’s children grow up in a fractured family with only one parent.

I dream that AIDS and Herpes will be controlled in the future, and I dream that having only one mate will be the main means of this control.

And I dream that abortion will no longer be the volatile issue that it is today, for the “morning after” pill will soon be extensively used for unwanted pregnancies.

There are transportation changes in my dreams as well, as most people will soon travel at over 200 mile per hour by Magnetic Trains, just as the people of Europe and Japan are already beginning to do.

I dream that political corruption, from the many City Councils all the way to the White House, will become a thing of the past; and I dream that being a politician will become a social responsibility for a change.

I dream that there will be strict enforcement of equal right for all races, for every age group, and for both sexes; and I dream that Elvis and all four Beatles will sing songs to us again, and they will sing this song with great joy.

Now most of us are very tired of waiting for all of this to happen here in America, even though it is all now both socially and scientifically possible.

However, it is likely to never happen without YOUR active participation and involvement in politics!

We, the Baby-boom generation, and our kids, and  even some of our grandkids, we may all either continue to be controlled by the current crop of crooked politicians whom we continually vote for, or we may take this control from them and make our dreams come true!

Let’s begin to run this country OUR way, instead of continually being the victim of the all too typical “politician’s” way!

Time To Wake Up

Just when will the American press finally wake up and smell the coffee?

Bush first told the American press that Saddam Hussein was a friend of Osama bin Laden’s, and they believed him; but the American people shortly found out differently.

And we were madly fixing the oil pipelines in Iraq at the same time!

We were then told that Saddam Hussein was a “terrorist” and that he had “Weapons of Mass Destruction”; but he didn’t!

And we were again fixing the more recently destroyed oil pipelines in Iraq!

Then Bush told the American public that we would hold democratic elections in Iraq, and create the first democracy in the Arab world.

That is looking more and more like a pipe dream, however; as the violence in Iraq continues to escalate on an almost daily basis.

And yet again we are fixing the oil pipelines in Iraq!

Bush has gone to several European countries, and he has asked those countries that opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq in the first place to please help us there.

However, many of these countries probably said:

So whatever happened to Osama bin Laden?

US Terrorism Policy

If this nation continues to act paranoid with regard to the past happenings of 9/11, American will soon rank as one of the economically poorer nations of the world.

It takes hours just to board a jetliner; the Chunnel was closed on Christmas day, just because of a supposed threat by Al Qaeda; the British have been recently hurt by bombs on busses, and many of their people were killed; the Spanish people have been killed and hurt by an Al Qaeda attack on a passenger train; the Philippines has been hit by Al Qaeda; Indonesia has been hit; India has …., and on it goes.

Al Qaeda has many members in every Islamic country.  But they are not the government in any of them.

They sometimes allow an Islamic nation’s government to help them, however, like the Taliban did in Afghanistan.

The United States, and the other civilized nations of the world, we can not protect everything we have, as well as all of our citizens.  We may, however, use what we have and they don’t have; and that is a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons aboard many nuclear submarines!

Tell all of these Islamic countries that if they allow Al Qaeda to plot, plan, and practice their terror techniques as the Taliban did regarding 9/11, we will give the three days to evacuate a specified city, and then it will disappear from the face of the earth!

Then this country may bring all of its troops back to the U.S., and begin to spend our many tax dollars to fix the multitude of problems that we have here at home!

US Energy Policy

The American energy companies donate millions and millions of dollars, to both the Republican and Democratic candidates who run for the many federal offices: House of Representatives candidates, Senate candidates, and they give much to both the Republican and Democrat running for the President of the United State.
They spend literally millions and millions of dollars - every two years - making very sure that the federal government does nothing to upset their chariest source of income: mostly selling petroleum and coal, usually bought by the American consumer!
Americans spend more and more money on gasoline for their automobiles, yet the people of Brazil drive using better than 90% ethanol.
Ethanol which is currently made from both corn and sugar cane.  The farming of corn and sugar cane is very big and lucrative in that county, as well, and farming is a very popular career.
The burning of ethanol is non polluting, as well.  Most politically powerful Americans are still arguing about Global Warming, but most of the rest of the civilized world knows the truth.  Its real!
If Nancy Peloci doesnt begin to immediately move to change things for the average American citizen, then I hope that the average voting citizen will begin to think GREEN.  We will!

Impeach Who?

This endless tirade against President Bush is a misnomer!  It is a misnomer because he is making very few of the national and international decisions regarding the lives of so very many American soldiers.
In fact, he isnt even in the White House long enough to think about so many of the very important issues confronting this country.
Vice President Dick Cheney is in the White House almost every day, however; and it is Cheney who is making most of the very important decisions which effect most all Americans!
Cheney has hundreds of millions of dollars invested in oil and oil related stock.  Iraq is the worlds third largest oil producing nation, however, and the American supply of it is getting tighter and tighter.
The average American was lied to regarding why we went to war with Iraq in the first place, but now the Cheney-Bush combo is telling the American people that it is because they both want a democracy over there.
Bush and Cheney say and do absolutely nothing about the millions of adults and children who are being both slaughtered and/or starved to death in Darfur, however.
It is long past time that Bush and Cheney were both impeached and convicted for the many American lives they have uncaringly allowed to be slaughtered in Iraq!

The Economy

The present viewing of Americas economic situation, by both the federal politicians and the American news media, is very tragically incorrect!
They are both assuming that this economic downturn is going to be like all the many others in this nations history, and that this country will eventually pull out of it in a short while without making any significant social changes.  This, however, is far from the truth.
Unlike downturns in the past, Americas economic recession/depression will be primarily caused by our ever growing petroleum shortage, while we continue to maintain a huge and ever growing dependence upon it.
Never before has this country had an ever growing energy shortage, and this one is only going to get worse as time quickly passes bye.
As the price of petroleum continues to rise - and it very definitely will - so does the price of most everything else: food, transportation, heating and cooling homes, etcetera.
The price of most everything will go way down, however, if the federal government will get behind a push to put solar panels and/or wind energy on our homes, factories, and businesses.
The price of transportation will go way down when we begin to travel at more than 200 m.p.h. by magnetic trains, as the Europeans and Japanese are already doing.
Both political parties in Washington, D.C. are literally owned by the current energy companies, however, but this may be rapidly changed if YOU will vote for third party candidates this fall!
