Bare-bones bio: After Milne, I spent four years at McGill,
then four years at the University of Michigan. B.A., M.A., Ph.D., all in Literature. Five years teaching at St.
Lawrence University in Canton, NY. A chance role in the local community theater led to my taking the Foreign Service
exam, which in turn led to an offer that I accepted.
Then came training in Washington as a newbie in the U.S.
Information Agency, followed by assignments to Belgium, Morocco, Niger, Washington, Brazil, Panama, Mexico, Washington again,
Kenya, and Brazil once more. Lots of good stuff, funny stuff, stressful stuff, my share of bad stuff.
Retired
from the Service in 2002, bought a house in Brasilia and have stayed since then. Since, a stint with the Center for
Strategic and International Studies in Washington, occasional analytical work with BBC Brazil, a usually open source on Brazilian
politics for a number of U.S. and international media outlets, as well as golf, poker and cooking.
On the personal
front, my first marriage, which ended in 1989, produced two terrific children. Maggie is now in Washington with
a legal NGO, Simon is a lieutenant in the Coast Guard.
Second marriage, to Marcia de Magalhaes Alvaro, a Brazilian
journalist, is chugging along. Two stepsons, both accomplished musicians.
And two golden retrievers and
a rebel westie.
Sincerely look forward to trading details of experiences with my 1963 colleagues and friends.
